Eclectic Home Tour: Summer 2017
Before our summer home tour commences, I think it's important to offer a disclaimer: no paper towels, brooms, mops or vacuum cleaners were harmed in this process. That's right, I did not clean the house before I took these pictures. Sure I put some toys away, fluffed a few pillows and tried to smooth out the bedding, but I have to shout out my son and our two dogs for helping me keep it real because even though I straightened up, if you look closely you will still see smudges, fingerprints and paw prints on almost every surface (all I ask is that you don't zoom in). I also promise not to show you any of our "under construction" bathrooms (that's the nicest way I can describe them- although only one is really under construction, the other two are not nearly pretty enough to release to the public yet!).
With these things in mind, and with a huge thank you to Jess of Domicile 37 for putting this tour together, I welcome you to our modern eclectic home in Connecticut...
Since we've moved in just 10 short months ago, we've replaced the old rounded white porch columns with squared cedar posts. We have also begun painting the exterior a deep rich gray (though 90% of the siding is currently the color of the light gray primer, and patches of the former beige make an appearance here and there). Once the landscaping was cut back, I shoveled about 2 tons of river rock into the plant beds (you read that right, I shoveled all of that stone myself!)
Upon entry, my eclectic mix of decor begins. (This is also where the eclectic mix of finger prints begins-remember don't zoom in!) The twisted metal light fixture and ceiling medallion are the newest additions to the space and replaced a dingy old recessed light.
From this location, our house splits into two "wings"- most of the living quarters are to the left and the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen are to the right. I will begin on the left...
The first room is what we consider our "formal living area" or "cocktail room." We usually curl up in here on cold nights to sit by the fire.
From the living room, you enter our recently remodeled office, which is packed to the brim, but actually pretty organized ...
Right off of the office is the playroom. We spend A LOT of time in here! It's where we put together puzzles, color, build train sets and watch more Netflix than I want to admit. So far, we've changed the white carpet (that ran through the entire house by the way), added the wood West Elm pendant lights and changed the knobs on the midcentury built-ins to leather pulls that I found on Etsy.
If we make our way back out to the living room and head to the left, we enter the dining room. These mirrored built-ins are original to the house and I have big plans for them in the future (think color and lacquer!), but for now they've been treated to some new custom hardware. We have also replaced the old chandelier with a more modern fixture, removed the chair rail, and painted the base trim black.
Adjacent the dining room is the sunroom- one of our absolute favorite rooms in the entire house! And straight on through is the kitchen. We very recently did a total remodel on the kitchen for the One Room Challenge so this space is feeling pretty awesome at the moment : )
Off of the kitchen is the long hallway (that begins at the entrance) that leads to our 3 bedrooms. We have updated each of them through paint and furnishings, but as far as full renovations and expansions go, we are waiting a couple years until we have a bigger budget so that we can make a serious impact on the house as a whole.
Well that's it! Check back in periodically to see what's new- believe me, there's always something changing! The next stop on the tour is Lizzie of Emmerson and Fifteen...
