Inspired By D.I.Y. : Sarah Jessica Parker Edition
The very first thing that comes to mind when I hear the actresses name is (like most people): Sex and the City. And immediately following that: shoes! Which brings us to the most recent "Inspired by D.I.Y." challenge (hosted by Jess of Domicille37) where the idea of Sarah's closet led me to spruce up my own.
Since moving into our new home, we have been tackling some major renovations and remodels, but the closets have remained untouched, and I'm embarrassed to admit, pretty disorganized. Check out the mess...
I mean, there are some seriously gorgeous pieces in that closet and you cant even tell! My clothes and shoes definitely need better treatment than this! Look at the designer shoes that were being suffocated inside a wicker basket (and a cardboard moving box that's out of view- I'm cringing while writing this).
That's right- Louboutins were in that heap, so a shoe cabinet was obviously a crucial component to the closet cleanup! Luckily, we had just the thing in the form of an unused Ikea glass-front bookcase. But, I wanted to add a pop of color and pattern, and be able to install the shelves on a slight angle without the shoes sliding off, so a fabric remnant that I picked up at Elephants Trunk Flea Market only a week ago, was the ideal solution. I wrapped each shelf with the fabric and voila, a display case was formed!
The top also serves as a surface for my clutches...
In addition to the cabinet, I sorted through my clothing and decided to donate and sell a fair portion. The remaining items were treated to more black velvet hangers for a uniformed look. And finally, I cut the bottom rack in half to accommodate my longer dresses and jumpsuits.
All in all this situation feels much better, but the mini makeover has actually encouraged me to go one step further and completely redo both of our master closets with a new shelving system, paint, and glass and wood folding doors. Now here's the big news... we will be dedicating one full hall closet to ALL OF MY SHOES!!!! (much like the ones below! EEK!)
So thank you Sarah Jessica Parker for getting my wheels spinning and for inspiring what may be the greatest gift my husband has ever given me: the promise of my very own, custom, shoe-only closet! I'm still kind of freaking out about it.
Don't forget to swing by the blogs of the other ladies to see how SJP influenced their projects. And check back here in the next week or so to see where our closet renos stand!
