Hi!

Welcome to my blog where I document projects involving home renovation, staging and design.

If You Hate It...Paint It!

If You Hate It...Paint It!

I know I've said this a million times before and I will say it a million times more, because I truly believe it: the power of paint is incredible! As a reader of interior design blogs, I'm sure you have witnessed many a room transformation with paint alone. Yet sometimes, when we are itching to change things up, we don't necessarily have the time or energy to paint an entire room. But, I bet you do have 15 minutes to transform an object in your home with a little spray paint! Recently, I did just that- actually, I did more than that- I went on a painting spree!

I was getting pretty tired of the way our living room was looking and I wanted to brighten things up, and do so quickly. After scoping out the space, I realized that the one piece of décor that was making it appear drab was the giant mirror over the fireplace. We once had this hanging on the pine fireplace surround of our lakehouse, andwhile its rustic appearance worked great there, the vibe of our new place is much different. So instead of scrapping it all together, glossy white paint was a great solution.

After taping off the glass ( I used Scotch blue exterior painters tape since it seems to stick better on mirrored surfaces, and it also tears very easily), I lightly hand-sanded the wood and applied the paint (Rustoleum glossy white spray paint). Check out the after...

As per usual, once I started I couldn't stop, and thus began my painting binge! I was suddenly seeing things around our house in a whole new light and pieces that I thought I would sell or donate became perfect candidates for a makeover...

Take a look at how this worn rattan tray went from being covered in crayons and ready for the "giveaway bin," to the sexy black number it is now, worthy of fur and a lounging brass and marble sculpture!

And this mirror (that I found in the trash on 72nd street in NYC, which was already quite attractive) was transformed into an absolute stunner with just 2 coats of a left over paint sample!

In addition to these items, I painted a small dresser that is currently holding hand towels and magazines in our powder room, as well as yet another mirror which was previously exiled to the garage, but now prominently reflects light in the den. Since each of these projects took no more than 30 minutes, you will probably catch me painting with wild abandon well into the future!

I'd love to hear about how you've used paint to revamp something in your home - add your story and/or post a picture to the comments below.

Til next time...

xoxo Diane
