Inspired By D.I.Y. : Iris Apfel Edition
Whoever came up with the phrase "pictures speak a 1000 words" must have known Iris Apfel. One glance at a snapshot of this style icon and we can absolutely understand why such a title is given to her. She exudes confidence in her colorfully layered accessorized ensembles. And upon further examination, I noticed that every outfit is carefully edited, so that the heaps of baubles and bundles of prints that converge on Iris's frame never appear excessive or haphazard.
Each time Iris pulls together a look, she manages to highlight a collected yet streamlined effect that many of us try to achieve in our homes, and one that is often hard to create. I honestly couldn't think of a better inspiration for my personal interior endeavors. So you can imagine how excited I was to create an "Inspired by D.I.Y." for this particular challenge!
For this project I focused on refreshing our guest bedroom. And the first step was to establish a focal point in the room with the "headboard." This velvety, teal and navy, Greek key patterned fabric, that I had left over from past upholstery projects, was perfect for creating that statement. And draping a portion of it on the ceiling gave the room a more luxurious feel. (The most difficult part about this was holding and nailing everything up by myself in order to evenly attach the fabric, otherwise this may be the simplest and most impactful DIY that I have done recently.)
Playing off of the colors in the headboard and the lamps on the end tables, the next step was to revise the bedding. I stuck to blues and orangey reds to keep things looking clean and fresh.
Finally, it was time to adorn the lamps in signature Iris Apfel fashion. Her beads upon beads doubtlessly influenced my decision to create necklace-like ornaments for the bedside lighting. Again, this D.I.Y. was as simple as it was impactful and only involved painting wood beads with craft paint, in the same color family as the rest of the room, and stringing them onto yarn.
For texture, and another nod to Iris's inclinations, I added some turquoise beads (that I found in the jewelry crafting section of Michaels) to jewelry string, and tied that around the lamps as well. Lastly, I constructed a tassel using that same blue yarn and attached it to the coordinating string of beads. The hardest step was waiting patiently for the paint to dry!
I'd like to think that I did Iris justice with this design and that she would be proud wearing the elements from the guest room as one of her statement making outfits- what do you think...?
