One Room Challenge: Family Room Redo- Week 1

One Room Challenge: Family Room Redo- Week 1

We have partnered with Raymour & Flanigan and received product in exchange for this post. All expressed opinions are 100% my own.

I spent a lot of time thinking about what project we were going to tackle for this year’s One Room Challenge hosted by Calling It Home and House Beautiful Magazine. (For those of my readers who aren’t familiar with the ORC- blogger and d.i.y.er participants have 6 weeks to completely transform any space in their home and each week we share our progress). This past August marked the one-year anniversary of our Connecticut home and we have done our fair share of remodeling, renovating, and styling, yet it still seems like there’s an endless number of projects to complete. My husband and I both contemplated working on one of our three “desperately in need of a makeover” bathrooms, but since we took on our kitchen for the last ORC, we decided to stay far away from flooring, tiling and plumbing this time around- lol!

Hence, the family room re-do made its way to the top of the list! And after Raymour and Flanigan came on board to generously supply almost all of the furniture for our most used space in the house, it was a no brainer! Wheels in my head started spinning and the creative juices were a flowing and almost immediately, I started cranking out design ideas and mood boards. Things have changed a bit since my original plans came together, but today I’d like to show you “the before” and my initial ideas for the after. Now I have to tell you that this space is not in dire need of a makeover and in fact it looks pretty good the way it is, however when moving into this home we combined a lot of what we had from our other properties and just piled it in here. So, while it may be presentable, it’s not exactly us.

The animal gallery wall is coming down (but don't be concerned- it will be re-framed and moved to another wall...)

Instead of the sofa floating in front of the sliding doors, 2 accent chairs will take its place. That will allow us to access the back yard from this room after we build a step over the baseboard heating.

We will be taking a lot of this furniture out of this area to make room for a game table and chairs- and who knows, maybe our disco ball will make an appearance here!

Another big part of making the space work better for us is to re-jig the built ins. Though the bottom half is the perfect toy storage hideaway, the top half is mostly unusable with the t.v. sitting directly in front of 3 of the 6 doors. The half that is accessible holds things that haven't seen the light of day since we moved in. In order to make this area fit our needs, we will be removing the top cabinets, mounting the t.v., adding a few floating shelves to either side, and installing a new counter top.

We plan on this house being one that we grow old in, so it’s time to finally make each room exactly the way we want it- a modern, funky, eclectic, chic space! Check in next week -same time, same place- to get a look at the updated design plans and to see if the paint and demo gods were on our side 😉

Love and Creativity,
